Ritu sets new 400m meet record

CHANDIGARH: Ritu Chikara of Haryana broke the one-minute mark for the one-lap race in the girls’ under-16 section to set a new meet record on the final day of the 19th North Zone junior athletics championship at the Panjab University ground here on Thursday.

National camper Ritu, who was entered at the eleventh hour after the maximum two entries from Haryana had already been confirmed, clocked 59.80 seconds to better the 12-year-old record held by Delhi’s Anuradha (1:00.40s) in Faridabad.

Chandigarh’s Lovneet Saini took the silver in 1:01.70s and Punjab’s Ekamjot Kaur (1:02.9s) settled for the bronze.

Haryana dominates

The dominance of Haryana athletes was evident in all aspects from winning medals to being caught for being overage or submitting disputable age certificates.

The meet, which was the qualifying championship for the all-India inter-zonal junior athletics championship in Guntur next month, saw over 50 athletes either being disqualified or their results withheld.

The maximum defaulters were from Haryana.

Still, Haryana athletes grabbed the maximum medals ahead of its nearest challenger, Uttar Pradesh.

Overall, Haryana won 36 gold, 24 silver and 23 bronze medals, while Uttar Pradesh finished second with 24 gold, 26 silver and 18 bronze medals.
