Assault on student: issue may be taken to rights panel

TIRUNELVELI: An alleged assault of a 12-year-old student by a constable attached to the North Vijayanarayanam Police Station has snowballed into a major issue as rights organizations are gearing up to take the issue to the State and National Human Rights Commissions.
In a petition submitted to the Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli, C. Sridar, on Thursday, the victim’s father, P. Mookkandi of Chettikulam under Nanguneri taluk, said his son, M. Sudalaikannu, studying VII Standard in a school at Sattankulam, had an altercation with Arun Pandian and Senthur Pandian, students of neighbouring Ramaneri, when they were returning home in a bus 15 days ago. As the quarrel intensified, Sudalaikannu was thrashed by the duo and at the intervention of one Kanniperumal, the boy was saved.
“However, the North Vijayanarayanam police, who accepted a complaint from Senthur Pandian, asked us to appear before them. When I and my son went to the police station on September 11, a constable, who asked my son to kneel down, assaulted him with the ‘lathi’ and a punch landed on his cheek. Since he could not see properly after the attack, he was admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on the next day,” Mr. Mookkandi said.
The complaint has now been forwarded to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Cheranmahadevi, for further enquiry.
Meanwhile, the ‘People’s Watch’ has planned to forward complaints in connection with this issue to the State and National Human Rights Commissions. Moreover, separate complaints are to be sent to the Chief Minister’s Special Cell and the Chief Secretary.
