Laproscopy facility introduced in Tuticorin hospital

R. Vimal Kumar

New service: The laparoscopy instrument introduced at the Tuticorin Medical College and Hospital.

Tuticorin: The Tuticorin Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) has made a step forward in its pursuit to modernise the services rendered to the poor and needy with the introduction of laparoscopy instruments on Thursday.

R. Meher Ali, Dean, TMCH, told The Hindu that the hospital has thus become the “first government institution” in the district to offer laparoscopic assisted interventions.

“The entire laparoscopic assisted treatment will be made available to the public free of any cost,” he said.

Dr. Ali said that the laparoscopic gadgets, which were procured at a cost of Rs.15 lakh, would enable the doctors to conduct minimally invasive surgeries between rib margins and hips, by making small incisions in the abdominal wall.

“Through the incision an instrument called laparoscope to view the organs inside and other necessary instruments will be inserted to conduct surgical procedures, after the patient was administered general anaesthesia,” the Dean said.

To start with, the hospital would perform laparoscopy to remove appendicitis, gall stone, hernia and intestinal perforation, at the rate of a minimum of 10 surgeries a week. “We plan to extend laparoscopic assisted procedures to conduct gynaecological interventions in a phased manner,” Dr Ali said.

Dr. Ali said that advantages of laparoscopy vis-À-vis conventional surgery include shorter post operative period and less pain. The avoidance of a large abdominal incision decreases some of the complications and there will not be any scars left post-operation.

Two surgeries

On the first day of installation, a team of doctors led by D Vijayasekaran, professor of surgery, on Thursday conducted laparoscopic appendicectomy on two youth.

K. Murugavel (23) and M. Shanti (15) were overjoyed as they underwent a painless surgical procure and they were able to walk on the first day itself.
