Measures to improve water supply in Vaniyambadi

Staff Reporter

Proposal to bring water directly from Krishnagiri Dam

Two new wells dug at Vadakupattu

Constructing group houses in the town approved

VANIYAMBADI: The municipality here is initiating measures to solve the drinking water problem, according to V. Sivaji Ganesan, Chairman, Vaniyambadi Municipality.

He said the municipality received a drought relief fund of Rs.10 lakh. The money had been used to dig two new wells at Vadakupattu. Water from the wells would be brought to Ramayanthoppu via Kodanchi through a newly-laid pipeline. “This will give some relief for the residents of the parched pockets in the Municipality.”

Stating that the Palar river, the main water source of Vaniyambadi, had gone dry, Mr. Ganesan said the municipality had submitted a detailed report to the Government to directly bring the water from the Krishnagiri Dam to Vaniyambadi. The cost estimate of the project was Rs.10 crore. The project had been submitted to the Government for approval. “If the project is approved, it will permanently solve the drinking water problem in Vaniyambadi,” he added.

Construction of houses

The municipality had got an approval for constructing group houses in the town, to be allotted to people with ‘pattas’ and those who came in the Below the Poverty Line (BPL) list. The Government had allotted Rs.40, 000 to houses that required renovation. The Municipality was yet to prepare the list of prospective beneficiaries.

Slum improvement

The municipality would work towards improving slum areas. There were a total of 13 slum areas in the Vaniyambadi town. An estimate of Rs.3.50 crore had been sent to the Government for slum development.

The amount would be spent for improving the overall civic conditions in slum areas. Road facilities would be provided in all the 13 slum areas. Provisions would be made for construction of a drainage canal. The 13 slum areas would have a community hall. Mr. Ganesan added that 15 solar powered sodium lamps had been installed on the Bypass for the convenience of residents in Pudur, Periyar Nagar, Anna Nagar, Thendral Nagar, Perumalpettai and Thiruvalluvar Nagar.
