“New techniques vital for aquaculture growth”

Special Correspondent

Lack of it is an inhibiting factor for diversification, feels official

Harvest of Asian seabass fish (Koduva) reared in cages in a pond inspected

Multi-pronged strategy formulated for speedy development of technology

KARAIKAL: It is imperative to develop aquaculture technologies on export-oriented species to facilitate more employment opportunities in the rural sector and to generate valuable foreign exchange in the country, said G. Mohan Kumar, Chairman of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and also president of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, here on Thursday.

Talking to media persons after inspecting the harvest of Asian seabass fish (called Koduva in Tamil) reared in cages in pond at the demonstration farm of RGCA at Karukkalacherry village in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry, Mr. Mohan Kumar said that it was noticed that lack of technology development was the main inhibiting factor for diversification of aquaculture.

Therefore, technology development through adaptive research and development is the need of the hour, he said.

He added that the RGCA had formulated a multi-pronged strategy for speedy development of aquaculture technology on areas where the requirements were urgent. The significant areas where technology development is urgently required are hatchery production of seabass seeds, innovative and adaptive farming technology and an appropriate cost-effective seed.

RGCA has already developed the technology on hatchery production of seed in its hatchery at Thoduvai, a coastal village in Nagapattinam district and millions of seeds are being distributed to farmers in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra.

Demonstration

Mr. Mohan Kumar said that the Asian seabass could be grown in earthen ponds with fresh or saline water and RGCA was in the process of streamlining the open pond culture system as well as culture of seabass in cages in ponds in its demonstration farm at Karukkalacherry coastal village in Karaikal.

The RGCA has successfully completed the demonstration of the technology to produce 10 tonnes of seabass fish per hectare through cage culture for the first time in the country, he said.

Visit

Progressive fish farmers from various parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra visited the RGCA demonstration pond in Karaikal. V.M.C. Sivakumar, MLA and a number of officials from Fisheries Department, MPEDA, accompanied the MPEDA chairman during his visit to the pond.
