Tamil Nadu
Efforts are being taken to regulate the traffic in rural pockets , writes R. Ilangovan Irresponsible driving, particularly the heavy vehicles such as passenger carriers and lorries, has been the primary reason behind many a fatal accidents on roads in Tamil Nadu. These accidents cause irreparable losses to the families and also reflect on the country’s growth chart. The booming sale in two-wheeler and four wheeler sectors and lack of corresponding improvement in the road net-work have been thwarting the concerted efforts of the government to bring down the road accidents. While Salem city remains a traffic-violators paradise with no stringent law enforcement in force, (even the post of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) is remaining vacant for more than 6 months now), there has been some sincere attempts to regulate the traffic in rural pockets particularly on National Highways. On the other day the Salem Superintendent of Police (SP) N. Bhaskaran convened an urgent review meeting of his senior colleagues with the officials from Transport Department. It discussed issues such as cancellation and suspension the licenses of the erring drivers who have caused fatal accidents due to negligent driving. Station Duty Officers who have registered these cases after field investigations have forwarded a total of 29 such cases to the Transport Department. But they are yet to take any concrete action. The meeting however removed certain procedural lapses and forged a better rapport of Investigation Officers with Transport officials in the issues concerning cancellation and suspension of erring drivers’ licenses. Motor Vehicles Inspectors who attended the meeting insisted that original driving licenses should be enclosed along with the reports in these cases for effective action. The SP urged the police officers to expedite the investigations in another 80 road accidents. He also asked them to submit reports to him within a week. He also asked the Transport officials to send him a detailed report on the action they had initiated on the erring drivers based on police recommendations. Photocopies of cancellation and suspension orders should be sent to the SP immediately. It also had been decided to conduct `Traffic awareness camps in all the sub divisions in the district in coordination with Transport officials. The pockets of frequent accidents had been identified. The drive against irresponsible driving had also been intensified.
