Family members of the student plan to approach the Director-General of Police for ‘justice’ CUTTACK: The death of Lopamudra Mohapatra that was believed to be a case of suicide on Wednesday, took a turn on Thursday when the city police registered a case of murder and criminal conspiracy and began investigations. A third year MBBS student of SCB medical college, Lopamudra’s body was found hanging in her hostel room with her feet touching the floor. “Following a complaint filed by the girl’s brother-in-law Ramakanta Mohanty, we have converted the UD case and registered a case under section 320 and 120 (B) of IPC. Enquiries in this direction have already begun", said Devesh Biswal, the inspector-in-charge of Mangalabag police station. Mr. Biswal said the complainant had named Dr. Braja Sundar Dash, a teacher of FMT department of the medical college and some students of the college for a misunderstanding that led to the death of Lopamudra. ComplaintMr. Mohanty in his complaint has said that the teacher was constantly harassing her for which she was in a state of depression for the past several days. The teacher had reportedly threatened Lopamudra to award fail marks in the examination. Dr. Dash when contacted, denied having any role in the death of the student. He said he had never threatened the girl nor had he harassed her at any point of time. “She was a bright student and was very popular among her friends. I was shocked to know about the tragic end of such a student who had a bright future ahead of her,” Dr. Dash said. Mr. Mohanty, on the other hand, expressing doubts over the police enquiry, told The Hindu that they were planning to approach the Director-General of Police and request him to order for a crime branch enquiry into the death of Lopamudra. Meanwhile, central range IG S K Upadhaya summoned the Mangalabag IIC and the investigating officer N K Mohapatra to take stock of the situation and the progress made in investigation of the case.
