Doctor battling for life

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A young doctor is battling for her life after she was criminally assaulted and an attempt was made on her life in the ESIC Hospital compound at Moti Nagar here this weekend.

The police, who have registered a case of attempt to rape and attempt to murder, suspect the involvement of an insider.

The 24-year-old victim, a final year student pursuing Diplomate of National Board, was working on a 44-day contract with the ESIC Hospital. Her room is on the first floor of the attached hostel that accommodates both men and women doctors. According to the police, the incident came to light on Friday night when the doctor’s sister came to check on her as she had not been answering her mobile phone. She found the doctor lying unconscious in her room and rushed her to the ESIC Hospital. Doctors there said she appeared to have consumed a poisonous substance.

When there was no improvement in her condition, the victim’s family referred her to the Balaji Hospital at Paschim Vihar the next morning. The doctors there told the family that there was no symptom indicating she had consumed any poisonous substance, and subsequently informed the Moti Nagar police.

“There are ligature marks around the neck suggesting that someone had tried to strangle her. She has also sustained injuries in other parts indicating that an attempt was also made to criminally assault her,” said a police officer.

“Wrong information”

The victim’s relatives alleged that ESIC Hospital authorities tried to hush up the matter by giving them wrong information.

“We are trying to find out why they said the doctor had consumed some poisonous substance when that was not the case,” said a police officer. The police are investigating the role of a doctor known to the victim and are awaiting her statement.
