‘Telugu girls averse to acting’

Staff Reporter

Krishna Vamsi ready to give chance to them in his next film

VIJAYAWADA: Film director Krishna Vamsi says no Telugu girl wants to act in films. He is even prepared to give a suitable Telugu girl a chance in his next film if he is shown one. “I will bring 10 other directors with me during my next visit. Show us Telugu girls who are willing to act. We will give them chance in our next film,” he said at a press conference organised here on Tuesday to mark the success of his film ‘Chandamama’.

Mr. Krishna Vamsi made these expostulatory remarks when reporters pointed to him that ‘Chandamama’ had no Telugu heroine despite its claim to be a “Telugu culture-centric” film.

He observed that Telugu girls were “apprehensive” of acting in films for a variety of reasons, including a low opinion about the film industry. “May be, they (Telugu girls) think we outrage their modesty. They also have fears about exposing,” he remarked. The director said the industry was hardly finding any “suitable girl”, though it was naturally easier to work with a Telugu-speaking girl. “The entire industry is waiting for a new Telugu face,” he said.

Reacting to a comment that there was excessive dose of romance in the film, he said in defence of the picturisation: “The romance in ‘Chandamama’ may be slightly on the higher side. But, it’s not a new phenomenon, and it should be looked at in accordance with the changing times. Even the classic ‘Missamma’ was publicised as a great social and romantic film.” The director said his big dream was to make a film on freedom struggle.

‘Chandamama’ producer C. Kalyan announced that he would organise the film’s 150-day function in the city. “I will try to bring three-fourths of the film industry to the city,” he promised.

Actor Uttej said many people were missing the moon because of the increasing living in apartments. The film would recount the Telugus’ love and affection for and association with Chandamama and Chandamama-related stories.

Veteran journalist Turlapaty Kutumba Rao presided, while film’s artistes Shiva Balaji, Navadeep, Kajal, Sindhu Menon, Rajesh and Aahuti Prasad, film exhibitors K. Krishnarjuna Rao and Sharat Babu and others also spoke. They thanked the filmgoers for making the film a big success.
