Indians come a cropper

BAKU: India’s campaign at the World wrestling championship ended with just one Olympic quota berth for the next year’s Beijing Games, as the three women grapplers in contention on Sunday fell flat belying all expectations.

Much was expected from Geetika Jakhar, the Haryana woman who has been projected as a future medal prospect, but the 63kg wrestler lost tamely to Italy’s Maite Piva in the second round.

Geetika had a first round bye considering her ranking, but she failed to translate that on the mat and lost 0-2 to Piva.

In the 67kg category, Suman Kundu won her first round match against Michala Spoustova of the Czech Republic in a close decision. However in the next round, she lost to Belarus’ Hanna Beliaeyva 4-0.

The last competitor, Minakshi Devi (72kg), lost to Venezuela’s Jarasmit Weffe 0-3 in the first round.
