Ashwin bags two titles

Sports Reporter

CHENNAI: Eighteen-year-old Ashwin Sundar (Rams Racing) was crowned the National champion in Formula Hyundai and Formula Swift categories in the penultimate (fifth) round of the JK Tyre National championship for cars at MMST Track near here on Sunday.

Controlled driving skills paid off for Ashwin as he sealed his rivals’ chances in becoming the National champion in two of the three classes.

With two more races (one leg) to go, Ashwin is all set to be declared as the ‘most valued performer of the National championship’.

However, the champion for the Formula Rolon class is yet to be decided and that will be known after the final round (on Oct. 7).

Race 1 in the Formula Rolon class saw Chennai lad Aditya Patel of Team NK Racing making it a start-to-finish affair despite the fighting efforts of Gaurav Dalal of Team Amaron WSRF.

Gaurav had to settle for a second place while Rayomand Banajee of Team Prime Racing who started 4th on the grid finished third.

It was a different story in the second race as Aditya and Gaurav were penalised 20 seconds each for ‘foul start’ and thereby made way for Saahil Shelar (Amaron WSFR), Ajay Kini (Amaron WSFR) and veteran Sarosh Hataria (Prime Racing) to finish on the podium in that order.

The highlight of Formula Hyundai (first race) was Ashwin Sundar exhibiting his career-best performance. Ashwin, running for the title, had to start ninth and last on the grid (he failed to compete in qualifying event) but his never-say-die attitude helped him steadily forge to third spot at the end of the third lap.

Then displayed his guts and pushed other eight drivers behind him before taking the chequered flag for a deserving win and the Championship title.
