Chennai begins well

Madurai: Defending champion Chennai beat Sivagangai 15-4, 15-5 in the inaugural match in women’s section of the four-team pool ‘D’ league of the 5th Tamil Nadu senior State throwball championship at the Velammal MHSS ground, Thirupuvanam near here on Sunday.

K.P. Shinsha, who represented the Indian junior team against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2006, was honoured with Ponnadai and a memento.

The results:

Men: Pool ‘A’: Kanyakumari bt Madurai 4-15, 15-7, 15-11. Women (Pool ‘D’): Chennai bt Sivagangai 15-4, 15-5. Pool ‘C’: Kanchipuram bt Madurai 15-6, 15-5.

Alagappa takes honours

Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology (Karaikudi), which won the men’s title on Saturday, took the women’s title defeating Thiagarajar College of Engineering (Madurai) 29-22, 29-20 in the Anna University zone IX ball badminton tournament at Karaikudi. In the third place match, Sethu Institute of Tech (Kariapatti) bt KLN CE (Madurai) 23-29, 29-18, 29-27.

SIT, Lady Doak triumph

Sethu Institute of Technology (Kariapatti) and Lady Doak College won the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the District-level colleges’ volleyball tournament for YMCA Trophy at Madurai on Sunday.

The results: Men: Final: SIT bt Sourashtra College 25-19, 25-16. Semifinals: SIT bt S. Vellaichamy Nadar College 25-20, 25-14; Sourashtra College bt Thiagarajar College of Engg. 25-16, 25-16.

Women (Three-team league): Lady Doak College bt Sri Meenakshi Govt. College 25-16, 25-18; LDC bt Fatima College 25-16, 26-24; Fatima College bt Sri Meenakshi Govt. College 25-17, 25-17.

Murugesh scalps six

Murugesh’s six for 16 helped Sourashtra College ‘A’ defeat Alagappa University (Karaikudi) by six wickets in the Laagans 2007 southern Districts inter-collegiate cricket tournament at Madurai on Sunday.

The scores: Quarterfinals: Alagappa University (Karaikudi) 100 in 14 overs (Murugesh six for 16) lost to Sourashtra College ‘A’ 101 for four in 14 overs; MKU College 128 in 16 overs (Anand three for six) lost to PSNA College (Dindigul) 129 for three in 13 overs (Vijay 50); S. Vellaichamy Nadar College 201 for nine in 18 overs (Santhaseelan 40, Arun 38) bt American College 98 in 15 overs (Arun four for 15).

KKN Power Project posts win

K.K.N. Power Project, helped by a haul of six wickets by Sathish, beat Prince Cricket Club by six wickets in the Tirunelveli District Cricket Association second division league at Sankarnagar on Sunday.

The scores: Prince CC 103 in 17.4 overs (Sathish six for 25) lost to KKN Power Project 106 for four in 12 overs; Sankar PTC 134 for nine in 20 overs (Ramesh 37, Habib three for 26) bt Indian Cricket Club 133 in 19.5 overs (Hyath 46, Lakshman Ganesh five for 10).

Narrow win

Mansur Youngsters Cricket Club beat RVS Sports Club by one wicket in the Dindigul District Cricket Association first division league at Dindigul on Sunday.

The scores: First Division: RVS SC 191 in 42.3 overs (SP Jeyaprakash 69, N. Senthil Kumar four for 52, SN Jeyakumar three for 40) lost to Mansur Youngsters CC 195 for nine in 39.1 overs (S. Jeyakumar 48).

Second Division: PSNA CC 173 for eight in 25 overs (S. Rameshkumar 50, Ayyanar three for 18, Kumaresan three for 16) bt Vaigai CC 110 for nine in 25 overs (Vijaykumar 51, P. Kishore four for 22).

Third Division: Yuvaraj CC (Palani) 117 in 16.2 overs (N. Veeramalai 40, R. Muthukumaran five for 28, Viswanathan three for 10) bt Warriors CC (Nilakottai) 68 in 14.4 overs (R. Alex three for five).
