The congested old bus stand in Tirupur. –

TIRUPUR: The new bus stand built at a cost of Rs. 7 crore is yet to get patronage from bus operators and passengers as well leading to traffic snarls in front of the old bus stand, which is still the preferred destination of both.

Despite the police presence, traffic snarls occur frequently outside the old bus stand causing much inconvenience to the travelling public.

The new bus stand, constructed eight years ago, has 50 bays and 69 shops.

Transport Department authorities say that they are taking efforts to vacate a Madras High Court stay, which allows private bus operators to operate from old bus stand.

Last year, the Transport Department took steps to operate buses bound for Erode (via Perumanallur), Coimbatore (via Avanashi), Mettuppalayam, Udhagamandalam, Gobi and Sathyamangalam from the new bus stand. The authorities declared that 184 buses that make 660 trips daily would not enter the congested old bus stand.

It was not successful even for a couple of months.

A service organisation Muyarchi has asked the Government to mark the old bus stand exclusively for town buses. All the other mofussil buses should be operated from the new bus stand. Muyarchi president N. Chidambaram said it would help motorists.

He said that special attention should be made to regulating traffic. Transport Department officials said the suggestion was welcome.

Introduction of shuttle services between the two bus stands would ease the passengers’ difficulties.

If the local body take a decision we will ensure that all buses operated from new bus stand, said a senior official of the department.
