THENI: Storage level in Periyar dam has scaled up sharply in the past two days, thanks to showers in catchments and at the dam site. Vaigai dam, another major irrigation and drinking source in the district, too registered a moderate increase in its level. Increase in storage of both dams has offered farmers a glimmer of hope. The level in Periyar dam on Thursday stood at 125.90 feet. Even as the inflow has tripled in two days, PWD officials could not draw more water owing to dysfunction of all the four turbines at the power generating unit at Lower Camp, connected with four giant pipes, the main outlet from the dam with a drawing capacity of 400 cusecs each. They drew water only through the Iraichal Bridge for irrigation purpose. Discharge from the dam was 1,408 cusecs whereas the inflow into dam was 6,408 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam stood at 55.41 feet with an inflow of 1,256 cusecs. Discharge from the dam was 991 cusecs. The PWD officials have already introduced turn system to regulate supply to 45,000 acres in Madurai and Dindigul districts. Periyar dam received a rainfall of 78 mm on Wednesday night and Thekkadi - 23 mm. Rainfall in other parts of Theni district, except the Cumbum Valley, was nil. Goodalur recorded 12.4 mm, Shanmuga river 14 mm and Uttamapalayam one mm. Farmers’ associations in the district have demanded release of water in PTR Canal and Periyar irrigation canal to fill irrigation tanks in Cumbum Valley. With considerable improvement in storage level in Periyar dam, release of water in these canals will enable farmers to raise crops on 5,146 acres. The release would also benefit several acres of land under Seepalakottai, Kamatchipuram, Veppampatti, Nallayagoundepatti, Thappugundu, Thadichery, Koduvilarpatti, Pudhukulam, Jangalpatti, Govindanagaram, Ambasamudram and Balasamudram tanks, they said.
