Merging academics with cricket

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: It was a merger of academics with cricket as the University of Western Australia (UWA) along with the Western Australian cricket team held a joint press conference at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday night. The focus was on attracting Indian students to study at the UWA.

Reputation

Hema Sharda from the UWA spoke about the university’s reputation in academics and its alliance with IIT, Chennai.

“Our internships are also open to students from other colleges and a large percentage of the 100-odd Indian students we have is from Bangalore and Chennai,” she said.

“Perth is a great city, full of opportunities and I ask all interested students to apply at the UWA. We have scholarships too and we are not commercial like other institutes,” said Prof. Sharda , which was echoed by her colleague Doug.

New conditions

The Western Australia team coach Tom Moody said that there wasa parallel between touring as a cricketer and studying abroad. “You have to adjust to new conditions, a new environment — climatically and culturally and it does enhance your learning. We are proud to be associated with UWA and we hope to renew this association next year too,” he said.
