ASI’s overreach

Over a period of time, geographical changes do take place. Land masses may disappear under the sea and sea beds come on a level with land. Lanka as described in the Ramayana may not be the present Sri Lanka but some other area separated by a water body from the north. The ASI should have restricted itself to commenting on the bridge and not expressed its opinion on the characters of the Ramayana.

Every religion claims that there is adequate historical evidence of its god’s existence and interaction with human beings. Many eminent scientists such as Isaac Newton were staunch believers of god. Newton, for instance, said “gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion.” But the ASI jumped to far-reaching conclusions and made overreaching statements to suit the political need of the government. That faith is merely the interpretation of emotions connected with religion was totally disregarded by the legal luminaries who were party to the now withdrawn affidavit.

The ASI’s finding that the Adam’s Bridge is not man made may be right or flawed depending on the credibility of the methodology used by it. But a key factor which it mentions as evidence to prove that the bridge was not man made is the absence of bones and artefacts. The structure is believed to have been a bridge and not a human habitation. As such, it is not likely to contain artefacts or bones. The ASI’s finding need not be the last word on the scientific investigation into the Adam’s Bridge.
