News Analysis
** A sentence in the tenth paragraph of an article “Nawaz Sharif’s deportation and after” (Op-Ed, September 13, 2007) was: “Ms. Bhutto says she has kept a window open for continuing negotiations with President Musharraf, but she has also announced her intention to return to Pakistan, ‘without or without’ a deal with him.” It should have been “with or without”. ** The sixth paragraph in a report “Why quake did not cause tsunami” (September 13, 2007) was: “Though a tsunami can be generated even by a shallow quake of 6.5 magnitude, maximum tsunami energy will always be focussed in the direction perpendicular to that of the fault plane. With the fault plane of Wednesday’s quake lying in a northwest-southeast direction, the maximum energy dissipation would have been in the same direction.” It was an editing error. It should have been “… the maximum energy dissipation would have been in the northeast-southwest direction.” ** Referring to a column “Ground truth – Revered then, feared now” (Karnataka, September 10, 2007, page 6), a reader points out that the accompanying photograph captioned “Marching ahead: An elephant herd on the prowl in the plains of Kodagu district”, was not that of an Asian elephant herd but of an African elephant herd. The African elephant can be quickly distinguished from the Asian elephant by its greater size and its larger ears. The African elephant also bears tusks in both sexes. This can be seen in the picture. The correspondent clarifies that the error occurred as the picture was downloaded from a website by a photographer who was ignorant of the difference between an African and an Asian elephant. In addition, the Bangalore Bureau did not check the photograph. ** The first two sentences in a report “Ramzan fasting begins” (“Briefly”, Kerala, September 13, 2007, page 4) were: “The Muslim fasting month of Ramzan will begin on Thursday following the citing of new moon at Kappad beach. Leading Kazis confirmed the citing of the crescent on Wednesday evening.” “Citing” should have been “sighting”. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
