TIRUPUR: Voting on the no-confidence motion against Palladam municipal chairman P. Ramamurthy, which was scheduled to be held on Monday, has been postponed.
Regional Director of Municipal Administration, Tirupur Region, T. Paulsamy, who is the presiding officer, did not turn up as he had gone on medical leave and was admitted to a private hospital in Erode, sources said.
Mr. Ramamurthy, who is also town secretary of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, has lost majority in the council as 13 councillors of the 18-member strong municipal council moved the no-confidence motion brought against him last month.
The dissident councillors, including one from his own party, led by vice-chairman of the municipality P.A. Sekar of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) moved the resolution. In the council the DMK has four councillors while DMDK and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have four councillors each. The Marumalarchi Dravida Kazhagam has two councillors, Independents two and the Communist Party of India and CPI (Marxist) have each one.
Disappointed over the postponement of the election, the councillors demanded early election to remove Mr. Ramamurthy from the post.
