Pilot playgrounds for all panchayats in Virudhunagar

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The District Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, has asked the Rural Development Department to set up pilot playgrounds one each in every panchayat union in the district before implementing the playground scheme in all panchayats under the ‘Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam.’

Inspecting the work of construction of playgrounds at Tiruchuzhi and Narikudi panchayat unions on Tuesday, the Collector also asked the Project Officer (District Rural Development Agency), Gladstone Pushparaj, to construct a building alongside the playground to keep all sports equipment under lock and key. Besides, the building could be used for playing indoor games such as chess and carrom, Mr. Puspharaj said.

Mr. Chandrasekaran wanted the officials to set up the grounds at a higher level to prevent flooding during rainy season. These grounds would have ball badminton, cricket and volleyball facilities. Besides, equipment for physical exercises such as parallel bars would also be placed. For children, the ground would have swings, slides and see-saw.

The pilot playgrounds with drinking water facility are coming up at Udaiyalampatti panchayat in Tiruchuzhi panchayat union and Sottamuri panchayat in Nardikudi panchayat union. “The Collector has asked us to study the pros and cons of the pilot playgrounds, before constructing them in all panchayats.”

Separate teams for each game / sports would be formed with the youth showing interests in these games/sports. The District Sports Development Authority would provide them necessary training and coaching through the school physical directors, the Collector said.

One school in each panchayat would also get a playground at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakh under the State scheme.
