CHENNAI: The police on Saturday night initiated action against nearly 1,750 motorists for not complying with the helmet rule, for drunk-driving and speeding. The drive was conducted at 56 checkposts, police officials said on Sunday. The Madras High Court had issued a directive making wearing of helmet compulsory and the deadline set was June 1, but the enforcing authorities had been lenient following representations to the State Government. Neurosurgeons in Government hospitals said there had been no significant fall in the number of accidents resulting in head injuries since the rule came into force. Doctors called for the strict enforcement of the rule. The police booked 1,698 two-wheeler riders for violating the helmet rule. About 15 persons were booked for drunk-driving and 31 persons were booked for speeding. Police sources said that in government hospitals at least 30 people underwent breathalyser tests on weekends. Almost all of them tested positive for alcohol. The surveillance was taken up on the order of City Police Commissioner J. Nanchil Kumaran.
