IN THE DOCK: Former Punjab DGP S. S. Virk talks to journalists in Mohali on Sunday after his arrest under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
NEW DELHI: The former Punjab Director-General of Police, S.S. Virk, was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance at Maharashtra Sadan here on Sunday for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The Punjab police registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against Mr. Virk on Saturday following preliminary investigations. Delhi police not informed
The Delhi police were not formally informed about the operation. Mr. Virk was immediately taken to Punjab for production in a court in Mohali. He has also been accused of running private businesses. A senior IPS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, Mr. Virk was removed from the post of DGP before the Assembly elections earlier this year. Hospitalised
PTI reports: Mr. Virk was hospitalised in Mohali hours after he was arrested. Doctors examining him in the Civil Hospital here suspected stone in his gall bladder and found his blood pressure high. Senior Medical Officer S.M. Sarang said the former DGP will spend the night in hospital.
