McLaren rules

MONZA: McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton were fastest in Friday’s second practice session ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

Two-time defending champion Alonso went round the 5.793-kilometre circuit in 1 minute, 22.386 seconds, almost a second faster than Hamilton. The Spaniard’s time was also the best of the day.

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, who led the morning session, could only manage sixth and eighth respectively. Raikkonen — fastest in the first session — had a disappointing 1:23.833 in the second.

Meanwhile, Formula One’s governing body has asked McLaren’s drivers for information on the Ferrari spy scandal, hoping they will supply evidence against their team in return for amnesty. — Agencies
