CHENNAI: Saurabh Singh of Delhi and Sharon S. Paul (Tamil Nadu) clinched the boys’ and girls’ under-16 titles respectively in the Good Earth AITA Super Series National tennis tournament at SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium on Friday. Saurabh overcame Digvijay Singh 7-5, 7-5, while Sharon scripted a hard-fought win over Ankita Raina 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) in three hours and 10 minutes. Saurabh used his height to good effect to tame Digvijay, who came through the qualifying rounds in both the categories. Digvijay, the much shorter of the two, did come back from being 4-1 down in the first set and 3-1 in the second before Saurabh closed out the match. The girls’ under-16 summit clash turned out to be a cliff-hanger. Sharon had the opportunity to serve out the match in the third set twice — 10th and 12th games — and even missed two match points in the 12th. However, she made amends in the tiebreaker. The second leg begins in Hyderabad on October 15. The results (finals): Boys: U-16: Saurabh Singh (Del) bt Digvijay Singh (HP) 7-5, 7-5; U-14: Mohit Mayur (TN) bt Digvijay Singh (HP) 6-3, 6-3. Girls: U-16: Sharon S. Paul (TN) bt Ankita Raina (Guj) 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(2); U-14: Ankita Raina (Guj) bt Sharon S. Paul (TN) 6-2, 6-2.
