KOCHI: For years, they have struggled on pebble-strewn runways. On Friday, when they were offered a new synthetic strip, the high jumpers rose to the occasion impressively in the Kerala State senior and junior inter-club athletic championship here. Steny Michael, in the under-16, and later Geethu Skaria, in the under-20 section, created meet records in the girls’ high jump on the opening day of the three-day championship. In between, Dayona Stanly equalled the meet mark in the under-18 section. “The new track has a nice bounce, it gives you a nice feel,” said Steny, a Kannur Sports Division athlete representing Kozhikode’s Malabar Sports Academy, soon after her personal best 1.57-metre effort which beat the year-old meet record (1.52) of Dayona. “Steny holds a lot of promise. She may look skinny but her jumps have a sort of explosive nature,” said her coach Tomy Cherian. The results: Boys: under-16 shot put: 1. M.A. Anandhu (Mar Basil HSS, Koth., 11.72m), 2. D. Vijin Das (GVR, Tvm, 11.56), 3. I. Ijas (Mar Basil, 10.93). Girls: High jump: Under-20: 1. Geethu Skaria (SAI, Tsr, 1.65m, NMR; OR 1.63: Lindamol M. Rajan, Vimala College, Tsr, 2005), 2. N.D. Tintu (MA College, Koth., 1.63), 3. N.K. Sini (SAGC, Thalassery, 1.60). Under-18: 1. Dayona F. Stanly (SAI STC LNCPE, Tvm, 1.60m, EMR), 2. V.G. Renukamol (GVR, 1.60, EMR), 3. Anju Benny (Mar Basil HS, Koth., 1.54). Under 16: 1. Steny Michael (Malabar SA, Kozhikode, 1.57m NMR, OR: Dayona Stanly, 1.52), 2. Tinu Maria (GVR, Tvm, 1.45), 3. M.I. Shifa (Parali HS, 1.40).
