Sandeep Singh for Germany

Hockey Correspondent

CHENNAI: Drag-flicker Sandeep Singh is in the news. Not in Chennai, where he could not figure in the Asia Cup hockey because of an injury, but in Germany. Reports indicate that Sandeep has recovered well and is in splendid shape. He is among the 32 players who will play in the first, second and third division league championships from this weekend.

The Indian invasion in the highly-rated German league has triggered an enormous interest among the hockey fraternity. Sandeep attracted widespread attention last week when he slammed seven goals from seven penalty corners for his club, Frankenthal, in a preparatory match. The league stretches up to next June with a break from November to April.

There is as yet no confirmation as to how many will return for the second leg, given India’s commitments to other international tournaments, including the Olympic qualifiers in the first quarter of 2008.

Former India coach from Germany, Gerhard Rach, is the co-ordinator. Interestingly India is also bidding for the Champions Trophy in December.

The list of top four clubs among the 12 from first division that will feature Indian players: Uhlenhorster HC (Hamburg, runner-up): Bharat Chettri; Gladbacher HTC: Vikram Pillay and Shivander Singh; TG Frankenthal: Sandeep Singh and Gurbaj Singh; HTC Stuttgarter Kickers: Viren Rasquinha, V.S. Vinaya and Deepak Thakur.

Seven of the 20 second division clubs are hosting Indian players: Großflottbeker THGC (Hamburg): Hari Prasad and Bruno Lugun; RTHC Leverkusen: Ajitesh Roy and Bharat Chikara; Rheydter SV (Mönchengladbach): Sardara Singh and Prabjoht Singh; Blau-Weiss Köln (Cologne): Raghunath and V. Raja; Marienburger HC (Cologne): William Xalco, Adrian D’Souza, Rajpal Singh and Bimal Lakra; Club Raffelberg (Duisburg): Vivek Gupta, Rushan Minz and Prab odh Tirkey; Münchner SC (Munich): Ignace Tirkey and Arjun Halappa.
