GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the State has worsened once again and vast areas are submerged in flood waters following heavy to very heavy rainfall for the past couple of days. Due to rise in the level of Brahmaputra and some major rivers several villages in Dhemaji, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailkandi districts have been affected. Cachar district is reported to be the worst affected. The death toll in this year’s flood has gone up to 51. In Dhemaji district, 100 meter stretch of a dyke near Kashinath Chapori in Sisiborgaon Circle was washed away while road communication between Gogamukh and Dhemaji town continues to be disrupted. About 1.8 lakh people in 237 villages are reported to have been affected in Cachar district. Five villages under Sonai revenue circle are reported to have been severely affected. People of these villages have been shifted to a school building in highland areas. One PWD road connecting several villages under Kotighora revenue circle is reported to have been damaged. Six relief camps have been opened in Hailakandi district in which about 600 people are accommodated. River Kushiyara at Karimganj is flowing at 15.99 m with falling trend against the danger level of 14.94 m and the previous highest flood level (HFL) of 16.39 m. The floods have so far affected a population of 70.15 lakh in 6,412 villages in 26 districts in the State. A total of 75 relief camps have been opened in which 11,288 people have been accommodated. Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Dibrugarh, Neematighat, Tezpur, while the river Buridihing was flowing above danger level at Khowang, Desang at Sivasagar, Dhansiri at Goalghat and Numaligarh, Jia Bharali at Tezpur, Puthimari at Kamrup, Sonkosh at Dhubri, Barak in Cachar and Kushiyara in Karimganj district.
