NEW DELHI: A special court for electricity-related cases has sentenced a showroom owner to a year’s imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs. 3.30 lakh for stealing power.
Anwari Ali, who ran a tyre showroom in Nangloi, was caught stealing 11 kW of electricity by directly hooking on to the LV mains. Subsequently, as per the provisions laid down in the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, a penalty of over Rs. 4.19 lakh was imposed on him.
When the accused failed to deposit the penalty amount within the stipulated time, a case was filed in the special court on August 10 this year.
“On his part, the accused pleaded innocence and said he has been falsely implicated in the case. After hearing the arguments of both the sides and taking note of the evidence presented by BSES, the special court pronounced the accused guilty of theft of electricity ,” said a BSES official.
