Thennur Irattai Vaical yet to be desilted

Encroachments have shrunk the channel to three feet Residents fear inundation during monsoon
TIRUCHI: Though the Corporation had announced that all major drainage channels would be desilted ahead of the monsoon, Thennur Irattai Vaical, a major drain, has been left out.
The Irattai Vaical and Kottai Vaical are two vital stormwater drains for Thillai Nagar, Woraiyur, Thennur, Anna Nagar and Madurai Road areas. With the monsoon around the corner, residents fear inundation.
The Irattai Vaical is among four channels that were handed over to the corporation for maintenance by Public Works Department. With Virupachipuram and Vannarapettai channels, the Thennur Irattai and Kottai vaicals form the drainage network.
The Thennur Irattai Vaical, also known as Cholarajapuram Vaical in some stretches, runs along Thillai Nagar and across Karur Bypass and Mela Chinthamani to flow into the Cauvery. The once 20-feet- wide channel has shrunk to three feet because of encroachments.
“Unless the drain is desilted and rid of encroachments, Thillai Nagar, Thennur and Anna Nagar residents will have to contend with inundation,” says a councillor.
Corporation sources said that the Irattai Vaical had to be cleared manually. Most stretches of the channel are narrow which does not allow the use of machines. The civic body has prepared estimates for manual desilting but the move has been put on hold pending the removal of encroachments, a politically sensitive issue.
