CHENNAI: The Sri Lankan Government has opposed the Sethusamudram Canal Project as it felt it would have an adverse impact on the island’s environment, according to Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy. Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, Dr. Swamy said a 34-member committee appointed by Colombo to study the environmental impact of the project had concluded that the island’s ecology would be adversely affected. Besides, it considered the Ram Sethu as its historical heritage which should be protected. The findings of the committee had been conveyed to him by Sri Lankan High Commission officials here, he said. Charging that the Union Cabinet had misled the nation about the financial viability of the project, he said the cost had been grossly underestimated and the revenue claim had been overestimated. The Ram Sethu should not be destroyed for implementing the project.
