Floodlight project delayed

HYDERABAD: The floodlight project at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal) originally scheduled to be completed for the India-Australia on October 5, has been put off as the process of finalising a firm to do the job, is in the final stages, informed G. Vinod, Minister for Labour and president of Hyderabad Cricket Association here on Tuesday.

Vinod informed the media that floodlights had become mandatory to get the official ‘Test’ status for the venue as per the ICC guidelines.

“It is only a question of time before the floodlights are in place. I had personally inspected the Jaipur Stadium lighting and was impressed with it as it was done as per the ICC norms. We are taking into consideration all aspects including intensity of the lux and the convenience of the players before going ahead to select a firm which meets the international standards. The firm should not just with install the lights but subsequently take care of the maintenance aspect too,” he explained.

These details will be explained to the ICC match referee Allan Hurst during his inspection of the venue on September 7, the Minister said.

Commenting on the security concerns for the match, Vinod said that he had a meeting with the Chief Minister Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Home Minister Jana Reddy and DGP M.A. Basith on Tuesday to review the same.

“We have called for an official review meeting within the next few days to be attended by the District Collector, the top officials from the Police Department and other related Ministries,” Vinod said.
