Baby: textbook supply without further delay
Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby on Tuesday assured the State Assembly that his department would ensure the supply of all school textbooks to the students within the next few days.
Replying to a submission from A.P. Anil Kumar of the Congress, he admitted that there had been an unexpected delay in supplying some of the textbooks this academic year. As many as 202 textbooks had to be printed for the students. The printing was entrusted to the Government Press, the Audio Visual Reprographic Centre and the Kerala Books and Publications Society (KBPS), with the contract clearly specifying that the textbooks should be supplied in March this year.
Shortage of paper
In the case of the KBPS, there was delay due to shortage of paper. The textbooks that still remained to be supplied to the students were now ready and would be despatched to schools all over the State immediately, he said.
Mr. Baby said the present uncertainty over which textbooks for Plus One classes would be resolved in a couple a days. The uncertainty had arisen in the context of a case now being heard by the High Court, he added.
Mr. Anil Kumar, while making the submission, said that it was indeed a shame that the Education Department could not make available textbooks to the students even after the expiry of a full term this academic year.
