Rumours triggered Allahabad violence

Anti-social elements trying to foment communal trouble: police

Policemen injured, vehicles set on fire

15 arrested, RAF deployed

LUCKNOW: No untoward incident was reported on Saturday from Allahabad, where an indefinite curfew was imposed in areas under five police stations following mob violence on Friday night.

The violence was triggered by rumours that the pages of a religious text kept in a mosque in the Kala Daanda locality had been torn off.

Brij Lal, ADG, Law and Order, told presspersons here that a mob of over 1,000 persons gheraoed the Kareli police station on Friday demanding that the guilty be arrested.

In the ensuing violence, two police vehicles were burnt by the mob, which also threw stones at policemen, injuring some of them. The police used force to quell the mob.

Curfew was clamped as a precautionary measure in the Kotwali, Atarsuia, Shahganj, Kareli and Khuldabad police station areas.

Fifteen persons were arrested for indulging in violence and arson. A strong police force, including a contingent of Rapid Action Force from Varanasi, has been deployed in the curfew-bound areas.

The police have not ruled out conspiracy by anti-social elements to foment communal trouble in the State.

Circular to police chiefs

Uttar Pradesh Director-General of Police Vikram Singh on Saturday visited Allahabad and issued a circular to all district police chiefs, asking them to be vigilant against anti-social elements.

Investigation

The circular said initial investigation of the recent incidents in Ambedkar Nagar and Agra, and Friday night’s incident in Allahabad suggested that some anti-social elements were trying to disrupt communal harmony in a planned manner.

Strict action should be taken against rumour-mongers, the DGP said.
