BJP gets into election mode

NEW DELHI: “Minority appeasement” through “reverse discrimination” and a “soft attitude” toward terrorism, besides the Congress’ ‘inability’ to run a coalition government are two issues that the Bharatiya Janata Party plans to mobilise opinion upon as it moved into election mode in anticipation of an early Lok Sabha poll.

This emerged after a two-hour-long meeting of the party’s central office-bearers and those in charge of State units here on Saturday. The meeting came a day after the BJP’s top leadership decided to shift to election mode on the premise that the patch-up solution between the Left parties and the Government would be short-lived.

Addressing the meeting, BJP president Rajnath Singh said the party would have to project itself as an effective alternative to the United Progressive Alliance, which was an “indecisive government” with a weak leader. “As a nationalist party, the BJP has to shoulder the responsibility of providing the people of the country with a stable, secure and responsive government.”

Agitation planned

The BJP will form a committee under the former president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, to organise a countrywide agitation against the implementation of the Sachar Committee report on the status of Muslims.

The former Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, flayed the the ‘pathetic performance’ of the UPA over the last three years. It was primarily because it was an ‘opportunistic’ alliance.
