Maoists ambush police party, 12 killed

KHAMMAM: Suspected Maoists ambushed a police party and killed 12 men in the forests of Jegurugonda near Dornapal in Chhattisgarh, about 50 km from Chintoor in Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.

A police inspector leading the party was missing after the incident; he too is believed to have been killed by the CPI (Maoist) cadres.

Inspector-General of Police, Bastar range, R.K. Vij said one of the two police parties engaged in road repair work near Chintaguppa during the day was attacked while it was on its way back.

Six injured

Six members of the party survived the attack though they were injured.

There was no trace of eight Special Police Officers (civilians in the garb of police), three police personnel and one station house officer. All of them are presumed dead.

Intensive search

According to reports reaching here, the police took up intensive search in the forest area following the incident.
