NEW DELHI: Former Olympian and FIFA referee S. S. Hakim welcomed India’s performance in reaching the final of the Nehru Cup football tournament here. “Football is looking up and it is a very encouraging trend to see crowds returning to the venues across the country,” he said. Stressing the need to support Indian football, Mr. Hakim hoped, “I am so happy the players are being paid well for their hard work. There is financial support from the corporate world too and my request to the administrators is to put this money to good use.” Mr. Hakim was speaking at a function to release the annual soccer diary compiled and edited out by the Veterans Football Club secretary Hem Chand. Noted football commentator Novy Kapadia was also honoured on the occasion for his contribution to the game. The soccer diary, released by Minister of State for Home Affairs Manikrao Gavit at the Chelmsford Club here on Monday, has detailed record of every edition of the World Cup, profiles of some great stars with unusual facts. There is a section on Indian football too. This edition of the soccer diary has been dedicated to the memory of former All India Football Federation secretary K. N. Mour.
