Shiv Sena candidate elected to Council

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena got a shot in the arm on Saturday when its nominee, Kishinchand Tanwani, a former mayor of Aurangabad, got elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Aurangabad-Jalna local self-government constituency in Marathwada region.

The Sena could bag the seat though its estranged ally, the BJP, had not supported Mr. Tanwani. He defeated sitting MLC, Abdul Sattar (Congress), considered to be close to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. The polling was held on August 23.

His victory signals the BJP that the Sena could win without its support. The BJP has been threatening to walk out of the alliance with the Shiv Sena since the Presidential poll to be able to contest the next Assembly elections on its own.The BJP had also been floating ideas about forming a separate alliance with some small parties including, the Sena’s breakaway faction, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
