It will be naive to expect any medals: C.P.S. Deo

HYDERABAD: “It will be naive to expect any medals but we are essentially aiming at the crucial 11th spot in the World championship in Munich (August 24 to September 2) as that would ensure a berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics,” said C.P.S. Deo, secretary-general of Rowing Federation of India, before the national team’s departure after a four-month camp at Hussain Sagar Lake here.

“I was a member of the jury in the last edition of World championship and I have to say that we are yet to reach that standard. So, we are looking at this World meet to gain experience and target the Asian championship in Korea next month,” C.P.S. Deo told The Hindu.

Focus on Asian meet

Indian chief coach Ismail Baig too expressed similar sentiments. “The focus is clearly on the Asian championship and this World meet is being treated as an exposure event. And also to test how good the preparations were in Hyderabad,” he pointed out.

“It will be great if we can improve upon our medal haul of three golds, four silvers and three bronzes in the last Asian championship in Hyderabad,” said Ismail Baig, who was conferred with the Dronacharya Award last year.

Raviraju appointed

The organising secretary of the AP Amateur Boxing Association and a ring official, G.V. Raviraju, has been appointed as a technical member of Ring Officials Committee of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation.
