Police Academy: phase I nearing completion

CHENNAI: The first phase of the Police Academy coming up at Oonamanchery near Tambaram is nearing completion.

If the work goes according to schedule, it is expected to be completed by December this year. Training of officials can begin in January next year.

A senior police officer said that at present work on plastering the building and laying of infrastructure such as sewage and roads was on.

The first phase includes construction of 408 rooms, lecture and seminar halls for training and administrative blocks.

The staying rooms are spacious enough, and if need be, the capacity can be doubled.

In the next phase, which will begin in a month, construction of the residential quarters for trainers, landscaping and planting of saplings will be taken up. When the facility is completed, it will be a state-of-the art academy with the facilities required for the basis training for sub-inspectors, Deputy Superintendents of Police and Assistant Superintendents of Police. Short-term courses for different ranks can be organised.

The institution is being completed 13 years after it was conceived. The Government announced the setting up of the academy in 1994 at a cost of Rs.36 crore. However, location of a suitable site was a problem.

As years passed, the cost escalated, resulting in a revised estimate of Rs.48.23 crore. The project, the foundation for which was laid on November 2004, is coming up on 132.92 acres.
