Road safety campaign bus presented to police

CHENNAI: As Madras Day celebrations continued on Wednesday, Cairns India Limited, a petroleum exploration and production company, along with a group of students, concluded a nine-month-long awareness campaign on road safety in Chennai.

In a special ceremony, Additional Commissioner of Police, Chennai traffic, Sunil Kumar, also received a modified road safety campaign bus.

Director of Strategy, Cairns India, P. Elango said that the initiative was a means of doing something for Chennai as it was the first city in India in which the company operated. “We started out in India in 1995 in Chennai, but with more exploration work we needed to move to Gurgaon. But before we left we wanted to do something for Chennai. We also wanted to do something different, so we decided on a road safety campaign.”

The company partnered with Loyola college students to create awareness amongst the youth. “The other part of the campaign was to assist the local traffic police with their road safety propaganda. We took over the propaganda bus used by the Police to create awareness and completely modernised it to make it more interactive and attractive especially to school children. Our final aim is to bring about a change in the attitude towards road safety,” said Mr. Elango. “I hope our initiative helps to bring about this change,” he added.

At the ceremony, the Loyola college students presented the street plays they had done as part of their campaign.

The skits touched on issues such as the need for compulsory helmet usage, and the hazards of speeding and drunken driving.

Mr. Sunil Kumar said he was happy to receive the new refurbished bus. “When the offer to came from Cairns to re-do the bus, we accepted. We are happy with the modernisation of the faculties, that will now be available for us to continue with our awareness programmes,” he said.
