Banks to upgrade security at ATMs

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Going by suggestions from the police, banks in the city have responded positively to improve the security mechanism for their Automated Teller Machines (ATM). The police, on their part, will step up security measures.

Following the murder of a security guard posted at an ATM kiosk in Ezhilagam office complex on Kamarajar Salai on Saturday, the Commissioner of Police G. Nanchil Kumaran called for a meeting with bank officials on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Commissioner said that of the 1,300 ATMs within the city police limits, only 30 per cent had cameras installed.

The Commissioner said he had asked the banks to examine the possibility of setting up cameras at ATMs and adopt centralised system of monitoring movement of people.

Some of the bankers told The Hindu they had requested the police to provide training to the security guards at the ATMs. A press release listed out points to be followed by the banks, police and public which included posting of sec urity guards round-the-clock at the ATMs, and to permit only one card holder at a time inside the ATMs.

For the police, it had stated that they should monitor ATMs during peak days.
