Being hosted by the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi The event will also showcase some rare dance forms
BHUBANESWAR: The stage is set for the two-day State-level annual young Odissi dancers festival at Jayadev Bhawan here commencing on Friday. Being hosted by the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi and supported by the Eastern Zonal cultural centre, Kolkata, the event will also showcase some of the rare and dying folk dances of the State. Akademi secretary Mr.Manmath Nath Satpathy said that six budding Odissi dancers including the best three performers of the first Government-organised State-level Odissi dance competition shall be featured in the festival. The artistes are Jyotsna Sahoo and Chitaranjan Sahani of Cuttack, Gayatri Khuntia (Puri), Ralli Nanda (Dhenkanal), Mitali Priyadarshini Giri (Balasore) and Ankita Rath (Angul). The Akademi used to conduct an annual Odissi dance festival to spot and promote promising dancers in which artistes recommended by different district level dance institutions affiliated to the Akademi were being featured, explained the secretary. The tradition, however, was modified this year with launching of the annual State-level Odissi dance competition by the department of culture, Mr.Satpathy said and added that Ralli, Mitali and Ankita were adjudged first, second and third in this year’s competition held here on June 10 last. The competition will be held every year and the best three performers will be offered an opportunity to perform in the Akademi-organised annual dance festival besides getting cash prizes, it was learnt. The two-day event will also showcase the highly acrobatic Gotipua dance of Raghurajpur artists’ village and the marginalised "Ghuduki Nacha" of Ganjam.
