CINCINNATI: Roger Federer didn’t let one frustrating game ruin everything. The top-ranked player overcame a momentum-changing second set on Friday, recovering to beat Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters. Federer will face Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals, looking to extend his 10-match winning streak against the Australian. Hewitt coasted to a 6-2, 6-4 win over a heat-sapped Carlos Moya. Ninth-seeded James Blake also advanced to the semifinals by beating Sam Querrey 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 on Friday night in a matchup of Americans.
In the earlier quarterfinal, Hewitt looked much fresher than Moya at the end of an oppressively hot week.
Meanwhile, Leander Paes and his Czech partner Martin Damm had an easy route to the semifinals after Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett retired after the latter’s back gave out, down 5-3 in the first set. The pair next meets old foes the Bryan brothers. Kuznetsova upset
Justine Henin advanced to the semifinals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Nadia Petrova on Friday night. She’ll play qualifier Yan Zi of China. The other semifinal is between Tatiana Golovin and second-seeded Jelena Jankovic after Golovin upset No. 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Jankovic defeated Virginie Razzano of France 7-5, 6-2.
