Rajiv Gandhi half-marathon on Aug. 20

HYDERABAD: Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas National half-marathon for men, recognised by the Athletic Federation of India, will be organised by the State Government on August 20 from 7.00 am at Public Gardens to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister, according to K. Panigrahi, VC & MD of NEDCAP.

Briefing media here on Saturday, Panigrahi said that the run, organised by SAAP and APAAA under the auspices of Minister of New & Renewal Energy, gained official status, meaning the certificates of participation would have same value as any other national sporting events by the Federations, was expected to attract 2,000 competitors. The highlight of the event is the participation of 39 IPS probationers, including three women.

The Half-marathon will be flagged off at Lalita Kalathoranam, proceeds to Buddha Bhavan via Sanjiviah Park and traverses back to Jubilee Hall via Tank Bund, Nizam Club.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Union Ministers Panabaka Lakshmi, Vilas Mettemwar will grace the occasion.

There will be separate categories like the Open Runs of 16km for women, 10km for boys and girls (under-18) and fivekm for boys and girls below 15 years. It was also announced that winner in men’s and women’s events will get Rs. 50,000 each and the runners-up Rs. 30,000 each.

Entries, which are free, close by 5.00 p.m. on August 19. No spot entries will be accepted.

Clinton shines

A brace by Clinton Amalraj, son of former India captain Victor Amalraj, helped St. Andrews High School enter the final with a 4-0 win over Meridian School in the Sachdev Sports inter-school football tournament, organised by Shastri Soccer Club here. Sohail and Arbaaz were the other scorers for winners.

In another semifinal, Army School (Bolarum) defeated Hyderabad Public School (Begumpet) 3-1 via tie-breaker after the teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time. In the tie-breaker, Solomon, Pradeep and Arun were the scorers for the winner while Kranthi netted for the loser.

Title for St. Pious

St. Pious High School (Ramnagar) won the inter-school basketball tournament for girls, defeating Holy Family School (Trimulgherry) 32-10 in the final here. Anusha shoe for the winner with 13 points.

Meanwhile, it was informed that St Pious High School, in association with Hyderabad District Basketball Association, will conduct R.Prabhaker Yadav Memorial basketball tournament for boys and girls from August 23 rd to 25 in its premises. For details contact Norman Issac, tournament secretary.

KV (Shivrampally) wins

Kendriya Vidyalaya (Shivrampally) won the boys’ under-14 title defeating Jalak Chatriya School 5-1 in the final of the inaugural Azam Farooqui memorial handball tournament at Gymkhana Grounds here.

The results:

Boys: Under-14: KV Shivrampally bt Jalak Chatriya 5-1; Under-12: Mamata High School bt Vijayanagar Colony HS 7-4.

Girls: Under-14: St. Joseph’s HS, King Koti, bt Vijayanagar Colony HS 12-8; Under-12: Vijayanagar Colony HS bt Mamata HS 8-4.

Women: Villa Marie College bt St. Francis 13-12.

Men: Bhavan’s Sainikpuri & Pragati Mahavidyalaya joint-winners (rain abandons final).

Rain plays spoil sport

Heavy rain forced abandonment of the last super league match between Osmania University and MCH Chintalbasthi in the B-Division hockey league championship at Gymkhana Grounds here.

The two teams were declared joint-winners by virtue of finishing with the same number of points. Young Hyderabad was placed second and BHEL Ramachandrapuram fourth.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Hockey Association informed that the umpires’ meeting will be held on August 20 at Begumpet Police Stadium at 5.00 p.m. All the umpires are to attend it, according to P. Kantaiah, secretary of HHA.
