Ugly spat mars proceedings

Bangalore: An ugly spat marred proceedings during the State C division hockey league second phase at the KSHA Stadium here on Saturday evening. The match between SBM Jain College and Bangalore Friends was called off following unruly events, four minutes into the second half.

SBMJC was leading 2-1 when umpire Prakash showed Bangalore Friends goalkeeper Ravikanth the yellow card for a foul. Immediately the Bangalore Friends’ players heckled the umpire, manhandled him and left him nursing bruises before the tournament officials stepped in and called off the match.

Bangalore Friends’ upcoming matches against DBHA and SAI ‘D’ have also been cancelled. A final decision will be taken at the tournament committee meeting on Sunday.

In an earlier match, Raghavendra’s twin strikes and a goal by Sachin helped Young Stars Hubli defeat ACE Hosur 3-1. Sarooraj slotted in ACE’s lone goal. In another match, Synergy Sports defeated Kodava Samaja 2-0. Umesh and Uthappa were the scorers.

Postal pips DYSS

Postal hung on to an early lead to pip Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) in a lacklustre Super Division football league match at the football stadium here on Saturday.

If the week-end crowd came in to see some action from the youthful sides, they were surely disappointed. The DYSS side, promoted as the second best team in last year’s ‘A’ division league, clearly do not belong to this level.

Postal, as expected, went into the lead in the 14th minute when Srinivas disturbed the net from the edge of the box off Arun Pandey pass. Thereafter Postal, despite enjoying better part of the proceedings, barely caused any threat.

On the other hand, DYSS’ chance of levelling came in the 83rd minute when Chetan Yadav headed straight on to the goalkeeper off a cross from Abhishek.
