Al Ameen bags honours

BANGALORE: Collegiate champion Al Ameen quelled a late fightback from Alva’s (Moodbidri) to lift the KVA State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament. At the Sree Kanteerava stadium outdoor courts here on Saturday, Al Ameen downed the Moodbidri side 25-23, 25-19, 28-26 in nearly 67 minutes of thrilling action.

Surana prevailed over Vivekananda 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 27-25, 18-16 for the third spot in another close encounter.

Darshan posts win

V.P.S. Darshan (4) defeated A. Augustin (3) in the State junior chess tournament’s boys’ section fifth round clash here on Saturday.

The results:

Boys (fifth round): A. Augustin (3) lost to V.P.S. Darshan (4); A. Balkishan (4.5) drew with Antonio Viani D’Cunha (4.5); N. Niranjan (3.5) lost to G.A. Stany (4.5); P.P. Prachura (3.5) drew with Anil Shetty (4); D. Yashas (4) bt T. Amith (3); H.S. Karthik (3) lost to Habib Sameer Ahmed (4); N. Nithin (3) lost to R. Nagesh (4); S. Shreeshan (4) bt V. Natarajan (3); Sunil Shetty (3.5) bt S. Srinivas (2.5); Ashrith (2.5) lost to Arjun Prabhu (3.5); Kedar Umesh Vaze (4.5) bt Surya Ram (2.5); L. Vivekananda (3.5) bt Shahrukh Sait (2.5).

Girls (third round): Pavitra Jagtap (2.5) drew with Shristi Shetty (2.5); Nisha Patkar (3) bt Shalon Joanne Pais (2); Sneha Karekar (2.5) bt M. Priyadarshini (1); Pallavi Bharadwaj (1) lost to S. Priyanka (2.5).

Dheeksha triumphs

M.R. Dheeksha, a seventh standard student of of Christ the King Convent, Mysore secured 9 points out of a possible ten and clinched the title in the Independence day Open under-15 chess tournament here recently.

Final placings: 1. M.R. Deeksha (9 pts.); 2. Sachin N Bharghav (8.5); 3. H.J. Amogha (8 pts); 4. Shreyas Ram (8); 5. K.J. Deshik (7.5).
