Hari shares title with Acs

NEW DELHI: Defending champion P. Hari Krishna won the Gyorgy Marx memorial chess title jointly with fellow former World junior champion Peter Acs at Paks, Hungary, on Sunday.

Hari, who held a half-point lead going into the 10th and final round, settled for a 31-move draw with Hungary’s Csaba Balogh to finish with six points. Acs scored over veteran Viktor Korchnoi, also in 31 moves, to tie for the top spot with Hari.

In the Abu Dhabi Masters chess tournament, Mumbai youngster Aditya Udeshi stunned Georgian Grandmaster Mikheil Kekelidze and another teenager S.P. Sethuraman proved equal to Armenian GM Karen Asrian. On the leading tables, Surya Shekhar Ganguly lost while K. Humpy drew.

The results: Gyorgy Marx memorial (10th round): Csaba Balogh (Hun, 5.5) drew with P. Hari Krishna (6); Viktor Korchnoi (Swi, 4.5) lost to Peter Acs (Hun, 6); Hou Yifan (Chn, 3) drew with Ferenc Berkes (Hun, 5). Ninth round: Berkes bt Korchnoi; Hari drew with Hou Yifan; Acs drew with Balogh.

Final standings: 1-2. Hari and Acs; 3. Balogh, 4. Berkes, 5. Korchnoi, 6. Yifan.

Abu Dhabi Masters (third round, involving Indians): Bassem Amin (Egy, 3) bt Surya Shekhar Ganguly (2); K. Humpy (2) drew with Vasif Durarbevli (Aze, 2); Valeriy Neverov (Ukr, 2) drew with S. Kidambi (2); Baadur Jobava (Geo, 2) bt Swati Ghate (1); S.P. Sethuraman ( 1.5) drew with Karen Asrian (Arm, 1.5); Farkhad Sabirov (Uzb, 1) lost to G.N. Gopal (2); Tejas Bakre (2) bt Talal Hilwani (Syr, 1); Aditya Udeshi (2) bt Mikheil Kekelidze (Geo, 1); M. R. Venkatesh (1.5) drew with Laith Ali (Irq, 1.5); Ulvi Bajarani (Aze, 2) bt B.
