New Delhi: The annual HCL prize-money bridge tournament begins on Thursday at the Radisson Noida, with six rounds of team-of-four Swiss league matches of ten boards each. The four-day event has become almost a mini-nationals in terms of participation. Around 60 teams from India and two from Pakistan have confirmed participation. The team-of-our winners stand to take home the Naresh Tandan Trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh, while the winners of the pairs event will bag the Neena Bonerjee Trophy and a prize-money of Rs. one lakh. J.P. Goenka’s team has won the team event here both in 2005 and 2006 with the same sixsome of J.P. Goenka, Pritish Kushari, Aloke Sadhu, Badal Das, S.N. De Sarkar and Sumit Mukherjee. Pritish and Aloke may this time play for Ashok Goel’s Dhampur Sugar Mills which has qualified to represent India in the World Championships in Shanghai in September/ October. Also to be seen in action will be Gopal ‘Texas’ Venkatesh’s Texan Aces, which created history in June by annexing the silver medal during the European Open Championships in Turkey. But the team to watch out for will be Kiran Nadar’s Formidables, which reached the quarterfinals of World Championships in 2001 and 2005.
