BANGALORE: The restructured Bangalore District Football Association (BDFA) league gets underway here on Thursday with MEG, the current champion, taking on the lowly LRDE. But the focus in this edition of the George Hoover Cup will be on the performance of a make-over Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML- KGF) team, which is expected to liven up the entire league. BEML, which finished third in the ‘A’ division last season, got the nod into the Super division with the BDFA enlarging the league from a 10 team affair to 15. “This is done to refurbish and help some institutional teams get a face-lift,” K.G.S. Alva, President, BDFA, said. BEML, having got a foothold now in the Super division, has set about its preparations in the right earnest. Coach Karuna Murthy is ecstatic at the developments and promised to deliver. . Besides BEML’s high profile entry, the good news is sponsorship from Nike India Private Ltd. in the form of footballs and jerseys and social worker and former footballer Jawa Peter’s humble contributions. The Nationals Sports Club, Mysore will conduct the 21st Independence Day district-level basketball tournament at the Subbarayanakere courts in Mysore from August 16 to 21. State badminton meets
The Karnataka Badminton Association will conduct the junior and senior State championships in Dharwad and Mangalore respectively from August 17. The Dharwad District Badminton Association and Rotary Club of Dharwad would conduct the junior championship for under-10, under-13 and under-16 boys and girls at the SDM Dental College courts. The event has received over 180 entries in all the sections. The tournament assumes extra significance as for the first time, the South Zone inter-State championship scheduled to be held in Kakinada in September, would have an under-16 section. The championship will be inaugurated by Mr. Basavraj Horatti, Minister for Primary Education. Senior championship
The senior championship, which has men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and under-19 boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles would start at Mangalore on August 30. Rohan Castelino, the defending champion, heads the list of players. The list also includes the in-form D. Guru Prasad and V. Amar among others. The women’s singles is expected to include all leading State players such as Ruth Misha, Ashwini Ponnappa, Nitya Soslae, Saumya Padhye and Monisha Vinayak.
