Kerala wins title

KOLLAM: Kerala won the overall title in the senior National powerlifting championship at the Bharatha Rajni Parish hall here on Wednesday.

The host, which won the women’s title, finished with 110 points, pushing Railways (101) to the second spot. Punjab came third with 98 points.

Railways won the men’s team title with 72 points followed by Punjab (55) and Maharashtra (39).

In the women’s section, Kerala came first with 72 points, ahead of Chhattisgarh (44) and Maharashtra (43).

Balinder Singh of Railways, who set three records in 90kg category, was declared the strong man of India 2007. A.B. Manju of Kerala pocketed the strong woman of India title, which was the second of her career.

Harjit Singh of Punjab came up with a record-equalling performance in squat in the men’s 125kg category.

He equalled Rakesh Kumar’s (Punjab) existing mark (370kg) in his second attempt and in his third he tried 375kg, but failed.

Harjit went on to win the gold in 125kg with a combined lift of 875kg, which was 2.5kgs less than the existing record. The results: Men: 110kg: 1. S. Nagarajan (Rlys) 847.5kg (345kg squat, 185kg bench press, 317.5 dead lift), 2. Manoj Kumar (Pun) 810kg (327.5, 210, 272.5), 3. Parveen Kumar (Pun) 790kg (280, 230, 280).

125kg: 1. Harjit Singh (Pun) 875kg (370 (EMR), 215, 290), 2. M. Shanavas (Rlys) 830kg (350, 180, 300), 3. Sanjay Sardesai (Mah) 712.5kg (300, 150, 262.5). Above-125kg: 1. Mazhar Khan (Rlys) 915kg (365, 240, 310), 2. Pardee Malik (HP) 817.5kg (330, 222.5, 265), 3. N.J. Jimson (Ker) 782.5kg (330, 180, 272.5).

Women: 82.5kg: 1. T. Rajasree (Ker) 462.5kg (197.5, 85, 180), 2. Blessy Job (Rlys) 435kg (180, 72.5, 182.5), 3. Sandeet Kaur (Pun) 420kg (190, 70, 160). 90kg: 1. T. Sajitha Raj (Ker) 467.5kg (185, 87.5, 195), 2. Deep ali Kulkarni (Mah) 415kg (172.5, 72.5, 170), 3. Kokoli Phukon (Asm) 415kg (175, 80, 160). Above-90kg: 1. Mallika Sharma (Rlys) 475kg (240, 70, 165), 2. D. Jyothi (Pun) 395kg (170, 75, 150), 3. Praveen Bapra (Dli) 395kg (170, 92.5, 132. 5).

Team championship:

Men: 1. Railways (72 points), 2. Punjab (55), 3. Maharashtra (39). Women: 1. Kerala (72), 2. Chhattisgarh (44), 3. Maharashtra (43).
