Darshini clinches honours

Sivakasi: S. Darshini, a local girl, studying eleventh standard in Sivakasi Y.R.T.V. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who was adjudged the best player of the Krishna Kaitan All-India junior ranking badminton tournament at Chennai recently, won two titles —women’s singles and doubles — in the Tamil Nadu State senior-ranking badminton tournament at A.J. Stadium here on Sunday.

The men’s singles final, between top seed Siddarth Jain of Chennai and N. Venkatesh of Madurai could not be completed as Venkatesh, who got a leg injury during his marathon semifinal in the morning, was not fully fit to play. He conceded after losing the first game at 10-21 and Siddarth Jain was declared winner.

The results (all finals):

Men’s singles: Siddarth Jain bt N. Venkatesh 21-10 (conceded).

Doubles: Roy Mathew & E. Raghavan bt K. Senthil Velan & Prakash 21-17, 16-21, 21-17.

Women’s singles: S. Darshini bt G. Amrin Mubarak (Che) 21-11, 21-23, 21-18.

Doubles: S. Dharshini & K. Suneri bt J. Anees Kowser & G. Amrin Mubarak 21-18, 18-21, 21-13.

Mixed doubles: Suzane Venglet & Roy Mathew bt J. Anees Kowser & E. Raghavan 21-19, 22-20.

Akash, Sai in lead

G. Akash and N.R. Sai Manivannan, both from Chennai, are jointly leading the table with 7.5 points each, in boys’ section at the end of the ninth round of the 20th Tamil Nadu State under-13 chess championship at Palani on Monday.

J. Mohana Priya of Kanchi continues to lead with 8.5 points in girls’ section.

Sathyabama triumphs

Sathyabama University, Chennai lifted the Ravi memorial Trophy defeating J.P.R. Engineering Basketball Club, Chennai 60-48 in the final of the 29th annual State-level open basketball tournament organised jointly by Rotary Club of Dindigul West and M.S.P. Solai Nadar memorial HSS at Dindigul on Sunday.

The results:

Final: Sathyabama University 60 (Sinumore Augustine 18, Milton 12) bt J.P.R. Engg. BC 48 (J. Karthik 13, P. Mohan Babu 10). Third place: Tamil Nadu State Police, Chennai 61 (Sankar 24, Navaneethakrishanan 14) bt Spor ts Hostel of Excellence, Chennai 53 (Prabhakaran 16, Puviarasan 14, Lingeswaran 11). Semifinals: Sathyabama University 82 bt Sports Hostel of Excellence 47; JPR Engg. BC 64 bt TN State Police 44.

Thiagarajar reigns

Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai beat Shanmuganathan Engineering College, Pudukottai by three wickets in the final of the Anna University Zone IX inter-engineering college cricket tournament at Karaikudi on Monday.

The scores: Zone IX (At Karaikudi): Final: Shanmuganathan EC 151 for nine in 25 overs (Munis Raja three for 27) lost to TCE, Madurai 153 for seven in 24.1 overs.

Zone X (At Krishnankovil): Final: Mepco EC 149 for eight in 25 overs (Kailashnath 38) bt DAEC, Tiruchendur 61 in 15.2 overs (Panneerselvam five for 17).
